ABOUT THE ART WORK
What/why:
To fika, to sit down with someone and drink coffee or tea, or even just water, and maybe eat something small and sweet with it is so much more than just a fika. It can be a wellneeded break, time to rest or gain new energy. It can be the startingpoint of a new friendship, or even a date. It can be spending time with an old friend, a new friend, collegues, family or just yourself. To fika is to socialize, relax, a time to remember what´s important in life. Fika is a treasure that brings people together. In my work at Eco Agroforestry Center I want to bring people together, connect them with each other and with the place. I want to connect the two hills on each side of Lärjeån with each other. I want to spark your curiosity and entice you to explore the surrounding. -What is that colorful thing up on that hill, lets go there! Maybe you will bring some fika with you, sit down, look at the view, relax and remember what´s important in life. Process/inspiration: The first time I visited Eco Agroforestry Center with my class, we walked around the area and our guides talked a lot about the importance of cooking and eating together. We saw the outdoor kitchen and the fireplace down by Lärjeån. They talked about how the eating brings people together and connects them with each other and with the place. They also talked a lot about the mud. All the clay that was discovered when building the stage. These two components sparked my inspiration. I wanted to do something around the concept of “fika”, and I wanted to work with the clay. My process started with collecting clay from the ground. I cleaned and dried it, rolled and shaped it into thin plates or tiles. Later on I glazed and burnt the tiles and the tiles were then smashed into small pieces to become the mosaik for the chocolate ball and the cupcake. The work with the clay was all new to me, very fun and cumbersome, just the way I usually find baking. While the clay was drying I made the rest of the cake parts in concrete. My first plan was to use corrugated sheet metal for the cupcake tin, but I had to give that up. It was impossible to get the sheet the way I wanted. In the end I found a piece of plain galvanized sheet metal that I just rolled into the tin shape, and that work out pretty good I think. |
ABOUT the continuation project 'SITTPUFFAR'
Chocolate ball becomes sittning balls for kids. In collaboration with Sarah Mubiru and the Planta Panta Tree International, I have been creating "sittpuffar" for the area. 'Sittpuffarna' are made with the same technique as the Chocolate ball and the cupcake in the metal art exhibition; concrete on the inside, ceramic mosaik on the outside. The mosaik is made of beautiful clay from EAC!
People are invited to join to create more 'sittpuffar' at the site. * Read more about Planta Panta Tree International project here. |
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Frida Svensson is a sculpture artist, working mainly with stone. Currently she is also a bachelor student in metal art at HDK-Valand, Göteborg University-campus Steneby. In her work, Frida likes to explore and play with different materials and expressions. Contrasts and combinations are important in her work. Between 2008–2010 she studied at Göteborgs Konstskola, and there she came in contact (and fell in love with) stone sculpturing for the first time. Since then she is a member of the stone departement at the collective artist workshop, KKV, in Bohuslän. Frida Svensson has attended several group exhibitions in Göteborg, Bohuslän, Rottneros park in Värmland and latest in Österbybruk north of Uppsala.
